Former White House event planner offers networking tips

By Eileen O. Daday

Daily HeraldIt's not every month that members of the Schaumburg Business Association hear about White House briefings and protocol for state dinners.

But that was the case Tuesday, when Laura Schwartz, former director of events for the Clinton administration, addressed their morning networking event.

Over her years in the White House, Schwartz planned more than 1,000 events, including 18 official state dinners. Before that, she served as Midwest press secretary and director of television for the administration. She showed video clips from her career, including a shot of President Bill Clinton describing how she told everyone on staff what to do.

“We called her ‘Laura Sarge,'” Clinton said.

Schwartz captivated the crowd with her behind the scenes glimpses of the White House, including some of the deals that grew out of White House events.

“Some of the things she has been involved in are unbelievable,” said Gary Rabine, of the Schaumburg-based Rabine Group. “It's exciting to have her here, and informative.”

This is probably the first time you'll read an article about a pavement maintenance contractor who projects to reach $1 billion in sales in 10 years. That's right, billion. Rabine Group, an umbrella organization for nine companies - six directly related to paving and pavement maintenance - has set $1 billion as its 2021 target, and based on recent growth and plans already underway, CEO Gary Rabine says it's a very reachable goal.

We are proud to announce that we had a team of 8 Rabine Group Team Members compete in the 8th Annual Sports Challenge put on by the Schaumburg Business Association on May 19, 2011.  The Rabine Group team members were a great cross-section of companies and departments and represented Rabine Group very well.

We were excited to compete in a round robin bracket tournement which included playing dodgeball, softball, volleyball, bags, and a "Two-Ball" which is a variation on basketball.  We competed well for the first half of the tournament.  We were in second place at the dinner break.  After the dinner break we fell apart at one of our next events and it was all downhilll from there.

The Rabine Group recently hosted an educational seminar attended by Property Managers at NAI Hiffman. The event took place last April 19, 2011 in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Rabine Paving’s Ryan Laughlin and UltraLot Paving Systems’ Scott Haislip, two of the company’s most experienced engineers, presented information on the benefits of asphalt and concrete paving. During the Q&A Session, one of the interesting questions raised was regarding how Property Managers should plan for a volatile market considering fluctuations in market pricing for fuel and asphalt products.

Ryan explained, “The price of asphalt paving products isn’t directly correlated to the price of gasoline but there is a strong relationship between the two. As the price of gasoline has steadily risen during the last 4 months, asphalt cement has followed in suit. Rabine Paving would advise that if you have currently available funds or expect to have funds available, secure proposals as soon as possible from your paving contractors. These...

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The Rabine Group was blessed with the luck of the Irish this St. Patrick’s Day! We were lucky because many of the employees participated in a cafeteria potluck. Three long tables were filled with potatoes, chili, cookies, ham, sauerkraut, fruits and so much more to make this holiday memorable. Once the clock struck 11:30, employees from offices near and far gathered to enjoy the feast. With party hats and shamrock necklaces, co-workers mingled and filled their bellies. Thank you to everyone who contributed a dish. We are lucky to have you!

Michelle Mussman, an Illinois State Representative, held a Business Roundtable Discussion at the Rabine Group headquarters in Schaumburg, IL today, February 18, 2011.  There were several community business leaders and members including representatives from the Schaumburg Business Association and Walgreens.  At the session Rep. Mussman discussed a new proposal that she is part of titled: HB 1084, which creates the Business Mandate Note Act.  Essentially what she is trying to pass is a law that will require the state legislators to file a report that says what the impact of any fee increase would have on the state coffers, as well as public and private workforce.  What she is trying to accomplish is a way to help prevent our elected officials from passing tax increases and fee increases without thinking through the full effect of such actions.  Rep. Mussman was questioned on this matter as members of the roundtable discussion expressed their sadness that such a measure needs to be taken.
