School districts struggle with higher fuel prices, less transportation dollars

Just like all consumers, school districts are feeling the pain at the fuel pump.

And given state cuts to transportation funding — slashing 42 percent — districts are being hit with a double whammy in their budgets.

Dan Joyce, superintendent of Serena Community Unit School District 2, said he is $15,000 over budget in supplies due to a recent fuel purchase needed to get through the end of the school year and summer.

While Mike Matteson, superintendent of both Rutland and Wallace elementary districts, said he is not over budget this year, that is due to the worst-case scenario he plans for each year, ever since 2008 when fuel prices first hit $4 per gallon.

"At Wallace, I budgeted $35,000 for the year for fuel. We have spent $25,501 through April and I would estimate $8,000 to $9,000 for May (and) June, so we will be close," he said.
