County earns award for turning shingles into pavementSeptember 27, 2011 By Staff
King County garnered a national award recently for turning asphalt shingle waste into paving material. The county received a National Association of Counties Achievement Award for the “Shingles in Paving” project. The awards highlight the most outstanding county model programs. Countywide, about 40,000 tons of asphalt shingle waste is disposed of each year. Though some shingle waste heads for recycling centers, some ends up in the landfill. In other states, the waste is successfully recycled for road applications, such as hot-mix asphalt pavement. Rakow Road paving continuesBy Lawerence Synett TribLocal reporter Yesterday at 3:30 p.m. The majority of new roadway should be laid by Friday on Rakow Road as crews continue mainline paving of the multi-million dollar widening project. Crews this week are continuing machine pours as well as hand-paving efforts at intersections, working their way to Pyott Road heading east, according to Terry Heffron, public information representative for TransLand Ltd. Paving up to the Route 31 intersection could be completed by the end of the week. “During the pouring of concrete, there will be some congestion,” Heffron said. “With hand pouring, there will be trucks in and out of the intersections, and that will cause some disruption.” Traffic would then be shifted from the temporary pavement on the south to the asphalt on the north throughout winter. Work would then ramp up again next spring. The shift is expected in late-November. Installation of a pedestrian overpass connecting...
