Nationally, 87,606 work zone crashes were reported in 2010, resulting in 37,476 injuries and 576 deaths. Additionally, an average of 20,000 construction workers are injured in work zones each year in the United States*. Safe driving is always important but becomes absolutely vital when driving through work zones. While work zones can be dangerous places, but they don't have to be. Here are a few tips for keeping yourself as well as others safe when driving through a work zone.

Man Pleads Guilty for Multi-County Asphalt-Paving Scam

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Terry Phelps pleaded guilty in multiple counties to charges of financial exploitation of the elderly, stealing by deceit, and unlawful merchandising practices for his role in asphalt-paving scams.   Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight, Maries County Prosecuting Attorney Terry Daley Schwartze, and Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney John Beger participated in the prosecutions with the Attorney General's Office.

Three Projects Using 97% Recycled Asphalt to Be Included on April Letting
 
SPRINGFIELD- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) today announced plans to construct three overlay demonstration sections featuring the most environmentally friendly Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) surface mixture ever developed in Illinois and perhaps the nation. Dubbed “Total Recycle Asphalt,” the HMA paving mixture contains more than 97 percent reclaimed and recycled materials. The demonstration projects using total recycle asphalt are on the April 26 letting and are expected to reduce paving costs.

CHICAGO--(ENEWSPF)--April 26, 2013.  Roosevelt University students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni and friends recently marked New Deal Soil Service Days and Earth Week by preparing an area consisting of 30 individual plots for an RUrbanPioneers Community Garden located at the Schaumburg Campus.  The group received help and some kind words from State Rep. Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg.

Last week was known nationwide as Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, targeted towards educating drivers on the need to drive safely and carefully through work zones to prevent accidents, saving lives in the process. We switch gears this week in order to recognize National Volunteer Week which kicked off on Sunday, April 21, 2013. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week is "about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities" (Hands on Network).
